FAST4 Online Teaching Series – Introduction to Preaching

New for 2020, this is another way to get Bible College teaching, live on your device, wherever you are. Each online teaching series runs over 4 weeks, comprising of four 1-hour live and interactive webinars, one each week for 4 weeks, eg: the 4 Monday nights of the month of May, from 7.30pm-8.30pm.

These online teaching series will provide overviews or more indepth looks at various topics to do with bible study, theology, mission, and practice, taught by high caliber, research active, Carey lecturers, or other experts in their field. All of these people are active participants in their local churches.

These are ideal for both individual and group use – learn on your own in your office or at home, or organize a small group to watch these together. Recordings will be available online.

This online teaching series is a basic introduction to preaching. It’s designed for beginners and for those who have never received formal training. Sign up and you will be introduced to the principles and practices for preparing and delivering messages that are faithful, relevant, clear and compelling.

Dr John Tucker is Principal of Carey. He lectures in church history and preaching. John coordinates the Carey School of Preaching, which resources preachers throughout Aotearoa. He is on the executive committee of the Australasian Academy of Homiletics.

Week 1

Hearing the text
How can the God who speaks through Scripture speak again through the messages we preach? This session will introduce you to the primary ingredients of preaching and outline a simple but effective process for conceiving messages that grow out of Scripture.

Week 2

Engaging the listeners
What makes some sermons relevant and engaging, while others are dry and boring? In this session we explore how to build a strong bridge between Scripture and culture, between the world of the Bible and the lives of our listeners.

Week 3

Wednesday 23 September 7.30pm-8.30pm

Shaping the message
How do you structure a talk so that it has focus and momentum? In this lecture we examine some of the different patterns that are available to us and the issues to consider when choosing between them.

Week 4

Wednesday 30 September 7.30pm-8.30pm

Speaking the word
It’s one thing to conceive a good message, but how do you deliver it so that people will listen? In our final session together, we consider the basic principles of effective and compelling oral communication.
