About us
The Baptist Union of New Zealand is made up of 240 member churches and faith communities, representing around 32,000 people across Aotearoa who identify as ‘Baptist’ Christians. Our shared mission is to bring gospel renewal to people and places, expressed locally through growing disciples, effective mission, robust leadership, healthy resources, and authentic worship.
The Baptist Union is supported by a small national team at the Baptist National Support Centre based in Penrose, Auckland (relocating to Greenlane in November 2025), where this role is located.
Purpose of the role
You’ll support the Communications Director in delivering a clear, consistent, and high-quality communications and media strategy across the Baptist Union of New Zealand. As part of a small, skilled communications team, your work will serve and support both local churches and our national movement, primarily through the Baptist NZ platform, which includes:
- baptist.nz website
- Baptist NZ app
- Social media (currently only Facebook)
- Printable newsletters
- Email communication
- The Baptist NZ Podcast Network
Key responsibilities
1. Communications & technical administration
- Schedule and publish written articles and podcast episodes (using EzyStream)
- Proofing, editing and formatting written content for clarity and consistency
- Manage and maintain the publishing calendar
- Manage app content and push notifications
- Coordinate and edit podcast recordings (including use of Riverside)
- Maintain podcast network channels (Spotify, Apple Podcasts, YouTube)
- Perform basic website updates (WordPress)
- Support app development and updates (parent and local church versions)
- Liaise with local churches and app developers as relationship manager
- Create regular email communications (using TouchDown)
- Collaborate with and support the wider communications team
- Contribute to the ongoing development of our communications strategy
2. Content creation (optional)
While not the primary focus, there is scope to create original content (written, visual, or audio) that supports and encourages Baptist churches in New Zealand. This aspect may suit someone with creative interest, offering variety alongside the admin core of the role.
Working environment
This is a part-time position (16–28 hours/week), with approximately two-thirds of the time onsite at our Auckland office. Hours are flexible, and at least one day should overlap with the wider teams in-office presence.
We are open to creative arrangements, including splitting the role across two people (e.g., separating admin and content creation).
Ideal candidate
This role may suit a student (e.g., in communications), a parent looking for flexible part-time work, or someone engaged in part-time ministry. You might be actively involved in a Baptist church or have familiarity with our wider movement.
We’re looking for someone who has:
- Excellent written and verbal communication in English
- Strong organisational and time-management skills
- Technical confidence (you’ll be trained in the specific tools we use)
- Great attention to detail
- A self-starter who works well both independently and in a team
- A passion for Jesus, the church, and our Baptist faith expression
- A practical understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and alignment with our affirmation of it
A background or study in any of the following areas is beneficial:
- Communications, Media, Journalism
- Creative Technologies
- Social Sciences
